The Materials Handler is responsible for preparing and staging materials for production and shipping functions. This includes processing, checking, verifying materials received as well as completing related computer entries and documentation. Stores inventory properly in appropriate locations and ensures proper rotation of product. Additional duties include delivering supplies to the production line accurately and in a timely fashion. The position is responsible for all aspects of operating a bag-making machine with an in-line printing press. Duties include assisting with machine set-up, making adjustments to maintain product quality and consistency, packaging product produced by the machine and performing periodic visual and system based QC inspections to insure proper and consistent adherence to quality standards and customer specifications.

  • Produce and package product per customer specifications.
  • Conduct regular product QC checks against established standards and take appropriate corrective action in the case of a variance.
  • Manage quality, productivity and waste according to set standards.
  • Make machine adjustments as necessary to ensure proper settings and conditions are maintained to hold to product specification and quality standards.
  • Perform routine press maintenance, cleaning and adjustments.
  • Keep work area and machine organized and clean per standards.
  • Accurately complete necessary paperwork.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

A typical “Day in the Life” as a Print Setup Technician includes:

  • Setting up in-line flexographic printing presses in a paper converting operation by preparing and mounting plates, cylinders, inks and other supplies for the job
  • Performing periodic visual and system-based QC inspections and make press/converting machine adjustments to ensure adherence to quality standards and customer specifications
  • Using X-Rite color matching system to verify PMS colors to customer specs – toning and mixing of inks may also be required to achieve approved ink color
  • Reading and understanding the job traveler information to determine special work instructions and any other special customer requirements
  • Troubleshoot and make decisions regarding quality of finished product – may need to collaborate with peers or other departments. Seek out solutions to improve quality, performance and overall setup processes
  • Play an active role in maintenance and cleanliness of the assigned press and surrounding area
  • Maintain a focus on safety, minimize waste and identify cost reduction opportunities


  • Plate and/or Press Department, other related experience required
  • Experience handling ink and/or using X-Rite preferred
  • Effective verbal and written communication along with the ability to accurately read and understand job information and production schedule
  • Individual with superior attention to detail, constant concentration, passion for problem-solving and excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to apply basic common sense to carry out job instructions along with curiosity in constantly looking for ways to improve
  • Understand basic math, fractions and decimals; can accurately use and read a measuring tape
